Since the departure of Etisalat, the 0809ja network has been far from being the same, and drop in service quality to very poor levels in recent times has been too obvious not to notice. Besides that, 9mobile has also been going through its fair share of managerial troubles, but like they say, “we move.” 9mobile is planning to take 4G to 16 cities in Nigeria.
The cities expected to experience 4G include Enugu, Sokoto, Owerri, Eket and other 12 cities; a total of 16. According to the telecom company, it plans to do this in the next few months.
“You will see that the first result of this injection in the next couple of weeks actually because we are almost ready to start massive roll-out of our infrastructure. We are planning to roll out 4G at a minimum of 16 cities, some existing and other new cities. This would help the company to renew its coverage and network expansion as well as continuing to improve our quality of service,” said the acting Managing Director, Stephane Beuvelet.
Reason for the spread
Giving reason why 9mobile is carrying out the project, Beuvelet said the selected cities are in need of more data. Also, better data service was needed for economic activities.
To achieve its goal, 9mobile plans to partner with smart off-grid technologies to power the firm’s infrastructure. It finds it as an effective way to provide coverage in rural areas.
Will 4G make things any better?
It would be absurd to think that the move by 9mobile to take 4G to 16 cities isn’t an attempt to halt the mass exodus from the network which has been going on for over a year. The telecom company has seen a large number of its customers depart due to poor network. The number of data subscribers on the network has also kept dropping.
